Overview

Bentota is a renowned beach resort in Sri Lanka. It is known for its broad golden beach and the peculiar lagoon formed between the confluence of the river and the ocean. It is the ideal location for water sports, luxury-relaxation vacations, as well as discovering oceanic diversity.

What can we do?

  • Relax at Bentota Beach. Unwind in the sun and sand at one of the cleanest and broadest beaches in the country.
  • Enjoy Water Sports: Enjoy jet skiing, banana boat rides, or windsurfing in the calm waters of the Bentota Lagoon.
  • Take a Madu River Safari: A boat trip through the Madu River mangrove systems, stopping at Cinnamon Island and viewing wildlife.
  • Visit Brief Garden: Experience the artistic landscape garden created by the renowned Sri Lankan architect, Bevis Bawa.
  • Visit a Turtle Hatchery: Learn about turtle conservation projects to protect sea turtles, including a visit to a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda.
  • Visit Lunuganga Estate Lunuganga Estate is the rural residence of celebrated architect Geoffrey Bawa, famous for its beautiful garden and architectural designs.

Which session is best for travel?

The best time to enjoy Bentota and the southern part of the country is from November till April.

Why? The ocean is quiet during these months, making it safe to swim or engage in activities like jet skiing or diving. The weather during this period is dry and sunny.

P.S.: During the period May to October, rain and rough seas caused by the south-west monsoon make water sports less likely.

How long to spend for a visit?

  • For Activities: If you only have plans for water sports, a Madu River safari, and a turtle hatchery visit, 1 to 2 days would be sufficient.
  • Beachfront Relaxation: For a full beach experience, to relax on the ocean, it is recommended for 3-4 days.

How can we arrive?

  • By Highway (Fastest): You can take the Southern Expressway (E01). It takes only about 1.5 hours from Colombo. You need to exit from the Aluthgama/Bentota interchange.
  • By Train (Scenic): The coastal train journey from Colombo Fort to Aluthgama or Bentota station is beautiful, running right alongside the ocean. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • By Bus: There are AC buses of various companies starting from Makumbura or Pettah, heading to Galle/Matara using the expressway. Normal buses, starting along Galle Road, A2, also go but take a very long time.
