Overview

Dambakola Patuna, also known as Jambukola Patuna, is an ancient and historically important Buddhist site located in Sambalthurai, Jaffna District. It is one of the oldest maritime locations mentioned in Sri Lankan history and is believed to be the place where Theri Sanghamitta arrived from India in the 3rd century BC carrying the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi sapling.

According to the Mahavamsa, King Devanampiya Tissa welcomed Theri Sanghamitta at this ancient port before the sacred Bodhi sapling was taken to Anuradhapura and planted. This event played a major role in the development of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Today, visitors can explore the peaceful Sri Sangamitta Viharaya, a beautiful white stupa, a sacred Bodhi tree, and several religious monuments.
