Overview

Ella Rock is a famous cliff located high above Ella village, offering incredible views of the hill country. The hike is tougher than Little Adam's Peak but is totally rewarding. The journey takes you along a railway track, through a tea plantation, past a waterfall, and up through a dense pine forest before reaching the rocky summit.

What can we do?

  • Railway Track Walk: Walking along the active railway line is a unique Sri Lankan experience (just be mindful of trains!).

  • Hiking Adventure: The climb involves steep sections and a walk through a beautiful, silent eucalyptus/pine forest.

  • Panoramic Views: The view from the top is spectacular. You can see Little Adam's Peak far below, the Ravana Falls, and on a clear day, the southern plains of Sri Lanka.

  • Picnic: The summit is a great place to sit on the rocks, have a snack, and relax after the climb.

Which session is best for travel?

  • Best Time: Start early in the morning, ideally between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM.

  • Why: By noon, the mist often rolls in and covers the view. Also, the climb gets difficult when the sun is high and hot.

How long to spend for a visit?

  • Duration: It takes about 3 to 4 hours for the complete round trip (up and down).

  • Distance: It's roughly an 8km - 10km hike in total.

How can we arrive?

  • oute: The hike usually starts from the Ella Railway Station.

  • Directions: Walk along the railway tracks (towards Kithalella station) for about 2km. Just past Kithalella station, there is a sharp turn to the left that leads into the vegetation and across a footbridge.

  • Note: The path can be confusing inside the tall grass and forest. Using Google Maps or hiring a local guide (available near the start) is often recommended for first-timers.
