Lake Gregory Park
Overview
Nuwara Eliya is called "Little England" not only because of the climate and the colonial appearance of the area, but the beautiful Gregory Lake, which is found at the heart of the city, surrounded by misty mountain ranges, is another factor.
Such a water reservoir was constructed in 1873 under the guidance of the British Governor, Sir William Gregory. The initial uses of the lake were to produce electricity for the tea plantations and to facilitate water sports. But today, the lake is the number one recreational center in Nuwara Eliya. The lake covers an immense area of 91 hectares of water and the well-managed surrounding park is the ideal escape for the bustling city to relax and breathe freely. Gregory Lake is always filled with a serene environment during the mornings and a lively atmosphere during the evenings.
