Udawattekele Sanctuary
Overview
Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, a historic forest reserve, has been existing in a hill ridge in the city of Kandy, in the immediate background of a prominent Buddhist temple, the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Previously, this has been referred to as "Uda Wasala Wattara," which literally translates as a Garden above the Royal Palace, designed as a pleasure garden for the Kandyan kings as well as a retreat for Buddhist monks. Today, it has been developed as a nature sanctuary, renowned throughout the region as a popular retreat from a busy urban lifestyle.
What can we do?
- Hiking & Nature Walks: Enjoy the dense forest canopy and giant lianas (creepers) by walking through some of the scenic pathways such as "Lady Horton's Drive."
- Bird Watching: It is considered one of the finest birding sites in Sri Lanka, a home for endemic species such as Layard's Parakeet, Yellow-fronted Barbet, and Blue Magpie.
- Historic sites to visit:
- Royal Pond: This is a very ancient pond presumed to be used by the queens of Kandy.
- Senkanda Cave: A small cave said to have been the abode of a hermit monk.
- Garrison Cemetery: A colonial-era cemetery that was situated nearby.
- Meditation & Relaxation: The forest is extremely quiet and peaceful; it is a perfect spot for meditation or to get away from the din of the cities.
- Vistas: Make it to "Kodimale" (Flag Point), the highest elevation in the forest for a vista over Kandy city. Trees sometimes obscure this.
Which season is best for travel?
Best Time of Day: The sanctuary is best visited early in the morning (7:00 AM - 9:30 AM).
Why? Mornings are cool and misty, and this is the best time for bird watching as the birds are most active.
Leeches: Since it is a rainforest environment, leeches can be present, especially after rain. It is advisable to wear closed shoes and long socks.
How long to spend for a visit?
Duration: Plan to spend about 2 to 3 hours here.
There are several walking tracks, and a leisurely hike covering the main points of interest takes time.
How can we arrive?
Location: The entrance is located just above the Kandy city center, near the Trinity College area.
From Kandy Town: It is about a 15-20 minute steep walk uphill from the city. However, the easiest way is to take a tuk-tuk from the Clock Tower or Temple of the Tooth, which will cost around Rs. 300-400.
