Kandy View Point on Rajapihilla Mawatha in the hill tops overlooking the Kandy Lake is the best place to enjoy the most breathtaking view of the whole Kandy city. From this spot, one can witness the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic, the golden roof, the milky white Kandy Lake also known as "Kiri Muhuda," and the busy city along with the misty mountains. The place is one among the top attractions to visit for photography enthusiasts to encapsulate the essence of the hill capital into one single frame.

What can we do?

  • Panoramic Photography: This is the ideal spot to obtain the classic "Postcard Photo" with views of the Lake and Temple in the background.
  • Enjoy the Scenery: Just stand and hold the railing and enjoy the cool breeze and the panoramic view of the city, designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
  • Shopping: There are a number of small stalls that sell Sri Lankan handicrafts, wood carvings, as well as souvenir t-shirts.
  • Night View: If you choose to linger till night time falls, the night view of the illuminated Temple of the Tooth, the reflecting streetlights on the lake, would be captivating.

Which season is best for travel?

  • Best Time of Day:

    • Early Morning (Before 8:00 AM): To see the city covered in a thin layer of mist with the sun rising behind the mountains.

    • Sunset / Twilight (5:30 PM - 6:30 PM): This is the most popular time. You can watch the sunset and see the city lights turning on, creating a magical atmosphere.

  • Avoid: Mid-day (11:00 AM - 2:00 PM) can be a bit hazy and hot.

How long to spend for a visit?

  • Duration: It is a quick stop. You only need about 20 to 30 minutes here to take photos and enjoy the view.

  • There are small shops nearby where you can buy souvenirs or a snack, which might add another 10-15 minutes.

How can we arrive?

  • Location: Located on Rajapihilla Mawatha, about 1km uphill from the Kandy Lake round.

  • From Kandy Town:

    • Tuk-tuk: The easiest way. A ride from the Temple of the Tooth will take about 10 minutes and cost around Rs. 300-500.

    • Walking: It is a steep climb (approx. 20-30 minutes) from the lake. It's a good workout but can be tiring.
