Peradeniya Botanical Garden
Overview
The Royal Botanical Gardens, commonly known as the Peradeniya Botanical Garden, are some of the well-maintained and most beautiful gardens in Sri Lanka. About 5 km from Kandy city, the garden lies along the banks of the Mahaweli River. With over 60 hectares, it boasts more than 4,000 plant species. It is famous for its formidable collection of orchids, medicinal plants, flowering trees, spices, and towering palm trees. The serene surroundings of the garden, coupled with various types of landscapes, have made it a favourite with tourists, students, and nature lovers.
Initially developed in the Kandyan Kingdom and thereafter extended in the British colonial period, the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is of importance both historically and scientifically. The areas one could enjoy by leisure walks along the shaded pathways, the themed sections of orchids in their glass house and the bamboo collection, or by merely relaxing on wide-open grass fields: this garden is also one of the significant centers related to botanical research and conservation in Sri Lanka. This makes the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya worthwhile for all visitors of Kandy and nearby areas with its natural beauty, educational value, and relaxing atmosphere.
Which season best for travel ?
- The ideal period to visit the Peradeniya botanical garden is from December to April.
- During this time, the climatic condition remains dry and pleasant in Kandy, and it is an apt time to visit the garden by walking through the paths while enjoying the sightseeing and picture-taking due to the beautiful flowers that will be blooming during this time.
- The rainy season, which spans from May to September, brings forth a beautiful display of greenery and fresh blooms in the garden; nonetheless, rain showers can make walking less comfortable during this season. However, this season makes this garden look particularly beautiful. For a comfortable and wonderful experience in this garden, it would be best to go in the early morning or in the afternoon when the weather is cool and less miserable.
How long to spend for a visit ?
It takes about 2 to 3 hours to visit the Peradeniya Botanical Garden depending on the depth of the visit.
Generally, 2 hours are required to walk around the major areas such as the orchid house, palm avenues, bamboo collection, and the flowering areas. However, in case you are a photography buff, a nature lover, or a fan of the peaceful ambience, you are advised to spend 3 hours or even more in the garden itself!
