Demodara Nine Arch Loop (Railway Loop Viewpoint)
Overview
Demodara Loop is a civil engineering marvel. Here, the railway track circles around a hill (like a turban) and passes through a tunnel directly beneath the Demodara Railway Station. This unique design was created by the brilliant engineer D.J. Wimalasurendra to manage the steep elevation drop that was too sharp for a direct track. It is the only place in Sri Lanka where a train goes under the same station platform it stops at!
What can we do?
Watch the Loop Action: Stand at the viewpoint or the station platform to watch the train circle the mountain and disappear into the tunnel under your feet.
Walk the Track: Unlike many other places, here you can safely walk along the track to the tunnel mouth (Tunnel No. 42) to see the architecture up close.
Visit the Station: The Demodara Railway Station itself retains a charming, old-world colonial look.
The Blackett's Story: Learn about the legend of how the engineers were inspired by a worker untying his turban (Talappa) to create this loop design.
Which session is best for travel?
Duration: About 45 minutes.
You can explore the station, walk down to the tunnel mouth, and wait for the train.
How long to spend for a visit?
Duration: Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours at the temple complex.
This allows enough time to climb the stairs (approx. 20-30 mins), explore all five caves leisurely, and admire the views from the top without rushing.
How can we arrive?
Location: About 6-7km from Ella town.
Transport:
Tuk-tuk: A 20-minute ride from Ella.
Train: You can actually take the train from Ella to Demodara (one stop) to experience the ride itself!
