Overview
Fa Hien Cave, also known as Pahiyangala, is one of the most famous prehistoric sites and largest natural rock caves in Asia, located near Kalutara.
Named after the famous 5th-century Chinese Buddhist monk Faxian, Fa Hien Cave contains incredible archaeological discoveries of human remains dating back over 38,000 years. Visitors can hike up the steps to explore the cavern, see the active shrine inside, and admire panoramic rainforest views.
You can easily reach Fa Hien Cave via Horana or Bulathsinhala by bus, train, or private vehicle.Â

Which time best for visit ?
The Morning and Late Afternoon are the best times to visit, as climbing the steps to the cave can be warm during the middle of the day. Visiting early allows for a cool hike up through the shaded jungle path and clear light for photography.

How can we arrive?
Fa Hien Cave is located in Yatagampitiya village near Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara District, easily reachable from Colombo or the western coast.
By Bus
ake a bus to Horana or Kalutara, then catch a local bus heading towards Bulathsinhala / Yatagampitiya. A short tuk-tuk ride from the main road brings you to the site.
By Train
Travel to Kalutara South Railway Station, then take a taxi or tuk-tuk directly to Fa Hien Cave (approx. 1-hour drive).
