Overview

Iranamadu Lake, also known as Iranamadu Tank, is one of the largest and most important irrigation reservoirs in Northern Sri Lanka. It is located in the Kilinochchi District, around 5 km southeast of Kilinochchi town. This massive man-made reservoir plays a major role in supporting agriculture, especially paddy cultivation, and provides water resources for thousands of farming families in the region.

The construction of Iranamadu Tank began in the early 20th century and was completed in 1921. It was built across the Kanakarayan Aru river basin to collect and store water for agricultural purposes. Over the years, the tank has undergone several improvements to increase its water storage capacity and strengthen its role as the backbone of Kilinochchi’s agricultural economy
