Overview
Madukanda Sri Dalada Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Madukanda, Vavuniya District. The site is historically and archaeologically important because local tradition connects it with the journey of Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha, who are believed to have carried the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha to Anuradhapura. The temple complex also contains the remains of an ancient monastery, including stupas, an image house, stone pillars and other archaeological features.
According to local tradition, Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha stopped at Madukanda while transporting the Buddha's Sacred Tooth Relic from Lankapatuna towards Anuradhapura during the reign of King Kitsirimeghavanna. This historical connection has given the temple its name Sri Dalada Viharaya. However, the exact historical reliability of this tradition is uncertain.

Madukanda Sri Dalada Viharaya can be reached from Vavuniya town by bus, train and private vehicle. By bus, visitors can travel to Vavuniya Bus Stand and take a local bus towards Madukanda. By train, take a train to Vavuniya Railway Station and continue by tuk-tuk, taxi or local bus. By private vehicle, drive from Vavuniya towards the Madukanda area, following the local roads to the temple.
