Overview
Rankoth Vehera is the largest stupa in the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa and one of the largest ancient stupas in Sri Lanka. Located in the North Central Province, this magnificent Buddhist monument was built during the reign of King Nissanka Malla (1187–1196 AD). The name "Rankoth Vehera" means "Golden Pinnacle Stupa," referring to the golden finial that once crowned the structure.
Standing approximately 55 meters (180 feet) high, the stupa was constructed using millions of bricks and reflects the remarkable engineering and architectural skills of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. Inspired by the famous Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura, Rankoth Vehera remains an important place of Buddhist worship and a symbol of Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and ancient ruins, it attracts pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and travelers from around the world.
