Overview
Nagadeepa Purana Vihara is one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, located on Nainativu Island in the Jaffna District. It is one of the country's sixteen sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites (Solosmasthana). According to Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha visited this island to settle a dispute between two Naga kings, making it a place of great religious and historical significance.

How can we arrive?
To reach Nagadeepa Purana Vihara, first travel to Kurikadduwan Jetty near Jaffna by bus, train, or private vehicle. From the jetty, visitors can take a short passenger ferry to Nainativu Island. After arriving on the island, the temple is only a short walk from the ferry terminal, making it easily accessible for pilgrims and tourists.
By Bus
Visitors can take a bus from Jaffna Central Bus Station to Kurikadduwan Jetty, which is approximately 30 km away.
From the jetty, regular passenger ferries operate to Nainativu Island. After arriving on the island, the temple is just a short walk from the ferry terminal.
By Train
Travel by train to Jaffna Railway Station from Colombo or other major cities. From the railway station, take a bus or taxi to Kurikadduwan Jetty.
Then board the passenger ferry to Nainativu Island and walk a few minutes to reach Nagadeepa Purana Vihara.
