Overview
Knuckles Mountain Range is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in central Sri Lanka, famous for its dramatic mountain peaks, misty forests, waterfalls, rivers, and rich biodiversity. The mountain range is located mainly in the Central Province, between the Kandy and Matale areas.
The range gets its name from the distinctive group of peaks that resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from a distance. The area contains rugged mountains, deep valleys, grasslands, cloud forests, and numerous streams, creating a beautiful landscape for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The Knuckles Conservation Forest covers about 31,305 hectares and forms part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
Knuckles is also internationally important for biodiversity, providing habitats for many endemic and threatened species of Sri Lankan flora and fauna.

Knuckles Mountain Range can be accessed from several directions, with routes commonly approaching the mountain area through Kandy, Matale, or nearby villages.
By Bus
Take a bus to Kandy or Matale from major cities such as Colombo or other parts of Sri Lanka. From there, continue by local transport, taxi, or tuk-tuk toward the selected Knuckles access point.
By Train
Travel by train to Kandy Railway Station or Matale Railway Station. From the station, continue by taxi, tuk-tuk, or other local transport toward the Knuckles region.
By Private Vehicle
Driving by private vehicle is one of the more convenient ways to reach the different access points around Knuckles. Some roads become narrow, rough, or difficult during rainy weather, so suitable vehicles and careful driving are recommended.
