Overview

Mahamodara Beach, a few kilometers from Galle Fort towards Colombo, is not just a beach for swimming or sunbathing. It is world-famous as a sanctuary for sea turtles.

Five out of seven species of sea turtles in the world choose Sri Lankan beaches to lay their eggs, and Mahamodara is one of their main nesting grounds. The turtle hatcheries that have been operating in this area for many years have played a great role in saving these precious animals from extinction.

Although the area and the conservation centers were severely damaged by the 2004 tsunami, it is a touching experience to see these projects that have been rebuilt without being shaken. It has a quieter environment than a busy beach like Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa, making it a worthwhile destination for those interested in nature and animal conservation.

What can we do?

  • Visit Turtle Hatcheries: See how turtles injured by fishing nets are treated, eggs safely buried in the sand, and newborn baby turtles in tanks.
  • Release Baby Turtles: For an additional fee, get the rare opportunity to safely release baby turtles into the sea (especially in the evenings).
  • Learn & Support: Learn about these endangered animals and contribute to their conservation.
  • Quiet Beach Walk: Take a leisurely stroll along the long, uncrowded beach (note: the sea here can be rough, so swimming may not be safe).

Which session is best for travel?

  • Time: The best time to experience the release of baby turtles into the sea is between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
  • General Visit: You can visit the conservation centers anytime between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

How long to spend for a visit?

  • Duration: An hour or an hour and a half (1-1.5 Hours) is enough to visit a conservation center and walk on the beach.

How can we arrive?

  • Location: It can be reached by a 5-10 minute tuk-tuk ride from Galle town on the Colombo road. Located right next to the main road.
