Overview

It is the second capital of Sri Lanka. It is also a World Heritage site under UNESCO. It is renowned for having well-preserved ruins of former palaces, massive stupas, and rock carvings. One of the unique features of an ancient city is that the ruins are located close to one another.

What can we do?

  • Explore the Ancient City: The most interesting way to experience the ruins would be to rent a bicycle and explore the park on two wheels.
  • Visit the Royal Palace:
The site attracts visitors because one can view the ruins of the seven-story palace built for King Parakramab
  • Admire Gal Vihara: Marvel at the great SL art – four huge Buddha statues chiseled on one side of a massive granite rock.
  • Walk around the Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa): Visit the holy compound where the Vatadage lies along with other important temples.
  • Rankoth Vehera: Here you can find the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa. It resembles the style of Anuradhapura stupas
  • Relax at Parakrama Samudra: Take in a breath of air in this ancient lake reservoir commonly known as the “Sea of Parakrama.”
  • Visit Lankatilaka Image House : Marvel at the huge brick walls and the statue of the standing Buddha inside.
