Overview

Rumassala Sanctuary is a protected natural reserve located near Galle on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Rich in biodiversity, the sanctuary is home to a wide variety of medicinal plants, rare herbs, birds, butterflies, and small wildlife species. Rumassala is also deeply connected to Sri Lankan folklore and history; according to legend, it is linked to the Ramayana epic, believed to be a fragment of the Himalayas brought by Hanuman. The area’s rocky hills, dense greenery, and coastal views make it a unique blend of nature and mythology.

Today, Rumassala Sanctuary is a peaceful destination for nature lovers, hikers, and those interested in traditional medicine and ecology. Visitors can enjoy nature walks, bird watching, and exploring scenic viewpoints overlooking the Indian Ocean. The sanctuary also plays an important role in conservation, helping to protect endangered plant species and maintain ecological balance in the region.
