Overview
Minneriya National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife destinations. It is famous for its large elephant gatherings, especially around the Minneriya Tank. The park is located in the North Central Province and is a great place to experience Sri Lanka’s wildlife, nature, and beautiful dry-zone landscapes. Minneriya National Park was declared a national park in 1997. The park covers an area of about 8,889 hectares and is centred around the historic Minneriya Tank, an ancient irrigation reservoir. The tank provides an important source of water for wildlife during the dry season.

The best time to visit Minneriya National Park depends on the wildlife experience you want. Minneriya National Park is located close to Habarana and Polonnaruwa, making it easy to include in a North Central Province tour. Visitors can travel by bus or train to nearby towns and continue to the park by taxi, tuk-tuk, or safari transfer. Private vehicles are also a convenient option, especially for families and groups.

Buses are available to Habarana, Minneriya, and Polonnaruwa from several major towns in Sri Lanka.
