Moon Plains (Sandathenna)
Overview
Located near the city of Nuwara Eliya, this is a beautiful plain and an Agricultural & Eco Tourism Zone. The main attraction here is the View Point located at the top of the hill. When you go there, you can see a 360-degree view, and this is also known as the "Mini World's End". On a clear day, 9 of the 10 highest mountains in Sri Lanka can be seen from here.
Key Features
- 360 View Point: From here, you can see the peaks of Piduruthalagala, Single Tree Mountain, Kikiliyamana, Great Western, Conical Hill, Kirigalpottha, Thotupola Mountain, Hakgala and Namunukula.
- Jeep Safari: To visit Sandathenna, you should go in a safari jeep. It is a wonderful experience to see vegetable crops, pastures, and animals like buffaloes and elk/deer during the journey.
- The Drop: The cliff at the top of the mountain offers an experience similar to the end of the world.
What can we do?
- Safari Ride: A 20-30 minute jeep ride through beautiful farmlands and forests.
- Photography: Taking photos of Nuwara Eliya city and the distant mountain ranges from the top of the hill.
- Cycling: There is also a special cycling track here.
Best time to go:
- Time: Before 7:00 AM or after 3:00 PM.
- Tip: If you go early in the morning, you can see the clear view and mountain ranges without fog. It may be covered in fog by afternoon.

- Duration: The entire journey takes about 1 - 1.5 hours.
How are you going?
- You can drive your own vehicle up to the entrance gate. However, from there, it is mandatory to rent a Jeep from the Sandathenna Jeep Association to reach the top of the mountain. (Private vehicles are not allowed to enter).
