Overview

Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is said to be the "Eighth Wonder of the World." It is an ancient rock fortress and palace complex constructed atop a massive rock column of 200 meters in height by King Kashyapa (477–495 AD).

The history reveals that the prince usurped his father's throne by killing his father, who was the king at that particular time and named Dhatusena. This king moved his capital to this spot because of security reasons due to his brother, Mogallana, who wanted to attack their brother. It is now listed as a heritage site by UNESCO and remains the most perfectly planned ancient site in South Asia.

What can we do?

  • Climb to the Summit: Ascend up the 1,200-step stairs and pass the imposing entrance of the "Lion Paws" or "Lion Gate."
  • See the Frescoes: Examine the renowned “Sigiriya Maidens” also called Apsaras, painted on the face of the rock at a sheltered recess.
  • Walking down Mirror Wall: View old "Kurutu Gee" or graffiti dating back over 1,000 years that past visitors had scribbled on this highly polished wall.
